Surat: The Education Department has taken strict action against schools in Surat that have failed to submit the documents for fire safety regulations. The Government has decided to cancel the recognition of the 16 schools under the Surat District Primary Education Officer. Despite the government orders, these schools have neither paid the imposed fines nor obtained the mandatory fire safety NOC.
Of nearly 380 schools in the Surat district, 44 were issued the notice due to a lack of fire safety measures. In these, 13 schools have paid the fines and submitted the required documents, while 15 more schools have provided documentation after the deadline. After all, 16 schools have entirely failed to submit the documentation.
Those schools that have not secured the fire NOC will not be permitted to conduct offline teaching for 2025-26. They will be allowed to operate only through online education platforms. This decision has been taken under the Right to Education Act, 2009.
A dedicated committee will be formed to cancel the recognition of these schools formally. This committee will investigate the cases and submit a report, which will be used to initiate the derecognition process. The education officer has emphasized that the step has become necessary as these schools even fail to submit the fire safety documents during critical periods like the Class 10th results and the RTE admissions process.
