Surat: The Gujarat government’s campaign ‘Swasth Gujarat, Medasthata Mukt Gujarat’ has now extended to Surat’s schools, where the quality of meals provided to students under the mid-day meal scheme will be closely monitored. The Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) has begun a special “breakfast and lunch audit” in schools after receiving guidelines from higher authorities. Their goal is to ensure that the food being served does not contribute to unnecessary weight gain among children. There is some news concerning SMC that some schools’ food is not very healthy for the students the which might cause the students might get ill.
The World Health Organization (WHO) reports that one out of every three people worldwide suffers from obesity. In India, around 43% of people above 18 are overweight, and 16% are obese. This has led to a rise in serious diseases like diabetes, cardiac disease, and neurological issues. To tackle these rising health concerns among students, special audits will now be conducted in Surat schools focusing on the nutritional value and quality of the food being served by the schools, which can affect the serious situations for the students who are served food from the school authorities.
The audit will focus on reducing excessive fat, protein, and carbohydrate content in school meals, aligning them with healthy eating standards. An awareness campaign called ‘Arogya Gram Khorak’ will also be launched to educate students about proper nutrition and healthy living. The SMC will conduct these audits regularly starting from 28th April 2025, covering all schools in the city. The larger aim is to curb obesity-related diseases among school-going children by ensuring they receive balanced and nutritious food and to foster a healthier future generation. They wanted to perfect information about the food means what they are serving to students and what the students are eating in the schools, as they getting this much situations and challenges they are facing while eating in the schools.
